DAY 3: Midyat/ Mardin
Breakfast.
Departure to Dara - the dead city. That's what they call one of the amazing human creations in Southeast Turkey. The Rock City is often compared to Petra in Jordan. It was built in 505 year of the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius 1 , who declared it the capital of the province of Mesopotamia and named it ANASTASIOPOLIS after himself. The city then passed into the hands of the Byzantines, here in the hands of the Persians. According to one of the versions, it was later named DARA in honor of the Persian ruler Darius. Nowadays, only a third of Dara has been explored. The remains of the excavated military stores can be seen, public bathrooms, outdoor theater, temples, bridge, agora, arches and other monumental structures. But most – the preserved landmark in Dara is the rock Necropolis . The traces of the facades of the church towards the Necropolis with the Virgin and Child depicted on it also make an impression.
The remains of Dara's huge water cisterns are also worth seeing, most of which are hidden underground.
We return to Mardin. About us, the Christians , Mardin is special, because one of the oldest Christian communities in the world lives here, about which we know almost nothing. These people call themselves Suryans and claim, that they are the first Christians, because they accepted the Christian faith already in the middle of the 1st century. Nowadays, their descendants keep alive their religion and traditions.
We have an unforgettable day in the city – infinitely beautiful among the amber colors of northern Mesopotamia, it is often called the pearl of Southeast Turkey. Is it because of its beautiful architecture, a mixture of different oriental styles, whether because of its ancient history, whether because of its stunning cuisine, we believe, that will captivate you forever. An ancient land, full of history, between the biblical rivers Tigris and Euphrates, where the oldest traces of human civilization have been found. The city was a possession of Assyrians, Persians and Byzantines, and much later the Arabs and Turks settled. Different religious communities have lived in Mardin since time immemorial. This place touched by eternity is the center and spiritual center of the Orthodox Christians in Turkey and it is not by chance that the city is known as “Turkish Jerusalem”. Mardin is full of historical monuments. It can be said, that the whole city is an open-air museum. When we walk the streets of the old town, we lose track of any time. We will see the castle of Mardin, which beautifully towers over the city. On its central gates, the two lions can still be seen today, as one of the symbols of the city.
We will visit the mysterious and mysterious Deirulzafaran monastery, also known as Saffron Monastery, because of saffron, which grows around the monastery. The first printing press in Turkey is also stored here, presented by Queen Victoria and a bishop's bier carried by two horses.
Our next stop is the Zinciriye Madrasah, also known as “Sultan Isa”. It was built by Melik Salih – the last sultan, ruled Mardin. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city with its cut domes. The building consists of a mosque and a tomb. Overnight stay.

Most- the interesting exhibit is the face of a gypsy woman made of small stones, she is also called the Mona Lisa of mosaics because of her spiritual radiance and lively eyes, that do not let you out of sight. According to one theory, it depicts a portrait of Alexander the Great, and according to another - the goddess Gaia - the Greek goddess of the Earth Nowadays, the gypsy woman has become a symbol of Gaziantep and an integral part of the tourist logo of Turkey.
The treasures, including the mosaics, remained relatively unknown until 2000, when the work of archaeologists reveals insane beauties, mosaic after mosaic. It turns out, that this place was an arena of masters, who competed to recreate scenes from Greek and Roman mythologies.
Free time for a walk. Exploring the old bazaar, in which we will have the pleasure of visiting the most famous baklava restaurant "Gülluoğlu" - The Son of the Rose, established since 1850.
